Free paddle sport courses available May 17-19, 2019 for LakeFest 2019. Reservations required. Complimentary primitive camping available on festival site for anyone signing up for one of the following free courses led by certified instructors from the American Kayaking Association and sponsored by the City of DeFuniak Springs, FL.  All courses held at various times and days from Friday, May 17; Saturday, May 18; Sunday, May 19.  Check-in at 1140 Circle Drive, DeFuniak Springs, Florida  32435. NIGHTTIME Kayak & Canoe Camping Course

  • Friday, May 17, 2019 • 7pm-10pm

Designed for paddle sport enthusiasts dreaming of taking a multi-day excursion down the Suwanee River or an overnight, exotic Eco-tour of the Grand Canyon but don't know what they'll need or what to expect along the way.  Sign up for this free three-hour nighttime course on Lake DeFuniak and learn from certified trainers of the American Kayaking Association (AKA) on what to do in nighttime waters, proper equipment to have with you, and safety tips regarding paddling and overnight camping. Free primitive camping available on LakeFest festival grounds (Friday and Saturday) for those who sign up for this course.    

  • Bring your own kayak/canoe/paddle board, life jacket, whistle, paddles.  However, you may request to use equipment provided by the City if available.

BEGINNERS: Everybody Paddles Course

Designed for beginners of all ages and ability levels to learn basic skills and safe practices for a fun day on the water.  Primarily for those who have their own kayak, canoe or paddle board but need to know the right handling and safety techniques, along with proper equipment needs required by law.  Some equipment will be available to use if you do not have everything you need (kayaks, canoes, life jackets, etc., but supplies are limited). The American Kayaking Association (AKA) will utilize the American Canoe Association’s (ACA) QuickStart curricula to offer a more detailed course with a focus on hands-on skill development training with a certified instructor in a small group. Register early!  Free primitive camping available on the festival grounds for anyone signing up for this course.

CERTIFICATION: Introduction to Kayaking Course

This free 6-8 hour course is designed for those who love their paddle sport activity and are frequently on a river, lake, bay or may be a member of a club or are a business owner/associate who sells equipment.  Completing this course will certify participants in paddling.  Free primitive camping available on LakeFest festival grounds (Friday and Saturday) for those who sign up for this course.  

The Introduction to Kayaking course is designed as a short program emphasizing safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition for entry level individuals in the public, private and commercial setting. This course is appropriate for all kayak craft, including traditional decked kayaks, inflatables and sit on tops. It is assumed the boats will be paddled solo. The instructor may want to limit this program to one type of craft, but should announce this prior to the start of the course.

Essential Eligibility Criteria (EEC)

American Canoe Association (ACA) courses are open to all individuals who acknowledge the ability to perform the following essential eligibility criteria. 1. Breathe independently (i.e., not require medical devices to sustain breathing) 2. Independently maintain sealed airway passages while under water 3. Independently hold head upright without neck / head support 4. Manage personal care independently or with assistance of a companion 5. Manage personal mobility independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance 6. Follow instructions and effectively communicate independently or with assistance of a companion 7. Independently turn from face-down to face-up and remain floating face up while wearing a properly fitted life jacket* 8. Get on / off or in / out of a paddlecraft independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance* 9. Independently get out and from under a capsized paddlecraft* 10. Remount or reenter the paddlecraft following deep water capsize independently or with a reasonable amount of assistance* 11. Maintain a safe body position while attempting skills, activities and rescues listed in the appropriate Course Outline, and have the ability to recognize and identify to others when such efforts would be unsafe given your personal situation* * To participate in adaptive programs, participants must acknowledge only the first six EEC listed above. Entry-level adaptive programs will involve teaching and practicing EEC #7-11.

Adaptive Paddling Clinic

This free clinic is designed for people with physical or developmental disabilities who would like to experience and explore the wonderful world of paddling.  Certified trainers from the American Kayaking Association will provide participants an opportunity to paddle in a safe environment under expert supervision.
