Officers with the DeFuniak Springs Police responded to Burdick Avenue at approximately 2 PM Friday, December 18, 2015 in reference to an aggressive dog. A Walton County Animal Control Officer had been dispatched to the area in reference to citizen complaints of a pit bull dog running loose. The Animal Control Officer requested assistance due to the aggressive nature of the dog. DeFuniak Springs Police Officers arrived and found the pit bull roaming freely in the yard of a resident. When Officers attempted to retrieve the dog, the pit bull charged at them and ran to an adjacent yard. Additional Officers arrived and a request for a tranquilizer gun was made. An Officer then attempted to make contact with the dog’s owner by knocking on the front door. The pit bull came from around the corner of the house in an aggressive manner toward the Officer whose back was turned. A Supervisory Officer observed the attack and fired one shot at the dog . The pit bull stopped attacking and fled to the woods. Officers eventually captured the dog on the front porch of a neighbor’s residence. The dog was taken to the Walton County Animal Shelter where it was later euthanized due to its injuries.
