[ARCHIVED] OFFICER COMMENDED FOR GENEROSITY ABOVE AND BEYOND

A couple became stranded in DeFuniak Springs after being displaced from their Caryville home. With nowhere to go and their resources expended, the family made it to the DeFuniak Springs Police Department to get help. Officer John Avery, Jr. responded and learned of their unfortunate circumstances that included finding out that the shelters in the area were full. Although the Police Department has limited resources to aid the stranded, Officer Avery took it upon himself to personally help the couple. Officer Avery took money out of his own pocket to buy them food, bottles of water, and gas. In addition, Officer Avery paid for a night’s stay at a local motel so the couple would not have to sleep in their car.

This couple was so appreciative that they wrote a multi-paged letter to Chief Mark Weeks describing their unfortunate circumstances and how Officer Avery came to their rescue.

Officer Avery was recognized on Friday by Chief Weeks and given a letter of commendation for his efforts. “Officer Avery’s generosity and compassion is what is desired in all of us,” stated Chief Weeks.
