[ARCHIVED] PEDESTRIAN KILLED WHILE CROSSING U.S. HIGHWAY 90

DeFuniak Springs Police responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash at the intersection of U.S. Highway 90 East and 10th Street on Wednesday evening around 4:45 p.m. 65 year old Gaylon Fred Harrison of DeFuniak Springs, was crossing from the north side of U.S. Highway 90 when he was struck by a blue car traveling in the inside lane. The impact caused Harrison to be flung onto the windshield of the vehicle before falling onto the roadway. DeFuniak Springs Fire Department and Walton County Fire Rescue responded to give medical aid. Harrison suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. 43 year old Jonathan Neil Brooks of DeFuniak Springs was driving the blue 2000 Ford coupe that struck Harrison. Police Investigators, along with Deputies from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office spoke to witnesses and made next of kin notifications. Investigators determined that a vehicle in the west bound outside lane had stopped to allow Harrison to cross. Brooks was unable to see Harrison while traveling in the west bound inside lane. Harrison reportedly kept walking into the path of Brooks, who unsuccessfully tried to avoid the collision. Brooks was not injured, but was taken to Healthmark Regional Medical Center as a precaution. The Medical Examiner’s Office was notified and responded. The investigation is on-going and charges are pending.
