[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: OFFICER REINSTATED - CHARGES TO BE DISMISSED

In July 2016, Lieutenant John Powers was placed on administrative leave due to criminal charges being filed against him in Holmes County, FL. Chief Weeks was notified this week that the State Attorney’s Office offered Lt. Powers Pre Trial Intervention (PTI). Under the PTI agreement, Lt. Powers is not to have contact with the complainant for a period of six months. Upon completion of the conditions set forth in the PTI agreement, charges will be dismissed. PTI is not an admission of guilt. Based on the PTI agreement, Lt. Powers will return to work on probationary status.

ORIGINAL: OFFICER PLACED ON PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE AFTER ARREST

DeFuniak Springs Police Lieutenant John Powers was placed on administrative leave following his arrest by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, July 12th, 2016. The charge stems from an off-duty dispute in which Powers is accused of allegedly slapping a cell phone out of another person’s hand. Lt. Powers will remain on administrative leave until the disposition of his charge of misdemeanor battery is resolved.
