[ARCHIVED] BOY SCOUTS LEARN ABOUT INTERNET SAFETY

DeFuniak Springs Police were recently invited to the DeFuniak Springs Boys Scouts Hut in order to promote safety with the Scouts.  Officers spoke on Internet Safety to approximately 25 Scouts.  The main message of the presentation was obtaining parental permission to use the internet.  Scouts listened as an Officer described the dangers associated with chatting with unknown persons, even playing on-line games.  Scouts were then fingerprinting using a system purchased by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.  Their important information was offloaded to a disk and given to parents just in case of an emergency.  None of their kids’ information was stored or retained by law enforcement.  “We want our community to know that Police are here to help keep our kids safe,” said Chief Mark Weeks concerning the recent Boy Scouts event.  The event ended with each scout receiving a safety bag with coloring books and additional information on being safe on-line.
