DeFuniak Springs Police Chief James Hurley stopped to assist a stranded motorist on Walton Road. While speaking with the driver, Chief Hurley recognized the vehicle as being reported stolen earlier this morning. Chief Hurley attempted to take the driver into custody and a struggle ensued. The suspect, described as a black male, approximately 6 feet in height, medium build, wearing a red/black long sleeved plaid shirt, and black pants was able to break free and flee the area with a handgun.
Multiple agencies to include the Walton County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Highway Patrol, and the Florida Department of Corrections K-9 teams responded immediately to assist. Additional DeFuniak Springs Police Officers were also called out to respond. As of this post, the suspect is still at large in the area of S.R. 83 N. and Walton Road. Residents are requested to secure their homes and vehicles and notify Police of any suspicious persons. Do not approach the suspect as he is considered armed and dangerous.
