[ARCHIVED] DEFUNIAK SPRINGS POLICE WARNS MOTORIST ABOUT CROSSWALKS

The DeFuniak Springs Police would like to remind the citizens of the importance of the pedestrian laws and their safety.

The DeFuniak Springs Police have recently received complaints that motorist are showing no due diligence to pedestrians in the area of Highway 90 East and 6th Street. The Walton County Courthouse is located in this vicinity, and at times produces heavy pedestrian traffic.

Failing to obey the pedestrian laws is quite costly if cited for this offense. The Office of the City Marshal, DeFuniak Springs Police would like to remind our citizens (motorist) to use caution when driving in these areas throughout the city, because your safety is important to us.

Below you will find a brief summary of the Florida Statues on Crosswalks, Pedestrians and Etc., however if you should have any additional questions or concerns we encourage you to contact a member of our staff.

Crosswalk defined by F.S.S. 316.003
6(b) any portion of a roadway at an intersection or elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings on the surface.

F.S.S. 316.2061
No driver shall enter an intersection or a marked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle the driver is operating without obstructing the passage of other vehicles or pedestrians.

Infraction - Moving Violation.

Fine Imposed - $161.00.
