DeFuniak Springs Municipal Airport (54J)
February Newsletter
Greetings everyone! February has been a busy month here at the airport. Planning for the 2012 Marvel of Flight is well underway and it’s looking like this year is going to be even better than the last! And, although we’ve seen mostly fog and low ceilings this month, there have been SOME good days here and there and we have enjoyed seeing most of you out there flying!
Marvel of Flight – Saturday May 19 2012. 7am-1pm. We are pleased to announce the date of this year’s Fly-in here at DeFuniak Springs! We have a talented and enthusiastic team of volunteers helping to plan and make this a wonderful day for everyone! A pancake breakfast starts at 7am followed by the opening ceremony. An aviation swap meet will be going on all day, so it’s time to dig through those closets and garages for stuff you need to get rid of! There will be a car show again this year and plenty of food and drinks available from non-profit/civic organizations. We’ll have a bi-plane and a helicopter out here giving rides! And here will be tons of other stuff for the kids to do! And this is just the start! Again we are still planning and preparing so we’ll keep you updated as things progress. Please feel free to stop by the airport office for more info.
AWOS/ Beacon - We are still awaiting approval from the FAA for the actual site approval. All of the contracts have been signed the Frequency has been designated and the phone and power is ready to go. We are anticipating the FAA to begin their approval process next week. The construction crews are ready to go as soon as approval has been granted.
Airport Advisory Committee – The next Airport Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday March 20, 2012 at 10:00am located at City Hall. Please feel free to attend these meetings as they are open to the public! This council has been tasked with making recommendations to City Council about your home airport! The Last meeting took place on Tuesday February 28, 2012. During this meeting Terry Dawkins was elected Chairman and Robert Fullenkamp was elected Vice Chairman.
Hangars – All hangars have been visited by Florida Pest Control to address and treat for spiders. Please let us know if you continue to see signs of spider activity. Note- Some spider webs were left in place but sprayed with poison. Evidently Spiders will eat the webs if they are hungry enough, so the poison will continue to help long after the original spiders are gone.
