The 2012 campaign for Special Olympics is well under way and Torch Run routes are being finalized from Escambia to Walton County. Our leg of the Torch Run is shaping up to be the biggest ever and represented by several different agencies, to include: The Walton County Sheriff’s Department; The Defuniak Springs Police; The Florida Highway Patrol; The Florida Parole Commission; The Florida Department of Corrections (Institutions); The Walton County Department of Corrections; The Florida State Attorney’s Office; The United States Probation Office; and The Florida Department of Corrections (Probation). We are again expecting to have some of our local, Special Olympic athletes present and hopefully have at least one athlete to run the entire route!
We also are excited that Applebee’s in Sandestin will be hosting a Tip A Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics on 3-20-12, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. If anyone is interested in participating, please let me know. We are expecting local, Special Olympic athletes to be on hand and hoping for media coverage.
The mission of Special Olympics Florida is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. It gives them the continuing opportunity to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families and other Special Olympic athletes and the community.
Law Enforcement in Walton County has again shown overwhelming support of Special Olympics by increasing public awareness and raising much needed funds.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail.
