[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: BURGLARY OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

DeFuniak Springs Police have learned from school officials that disciplinary action will be taken against the students involved in the burglary and vandalism of West DeFuniak Elementary School. 8 Students were charged after they pried open a cafeteria window on two different nights. The juveniles then entered the school and began vandalizing the facility. The suspects were observed on video surveillance causing damage and consuming beverages, snacks, and ice cream that were stolen from various rooms in the school.

Charges were brought against the 8 students on Thursday, April 5th that included Burglary and Felony Criminal Mischief. The criminal mischief charges were a result of the theft and destruction of food items, including blue syrup that was scattered throughout the Teacher’s Lounge. Approximately $1000 in damage was caused during the burglary and vandalism to the school. In addition, one juvenile was charged with giving a false statement to law enforcement. School officials repaired and re-secured the damaged window students pried open to gain entry.

DeFuniak Springs Police wish to thank school officials and the cooperation of the parents in concluding this investigation quickly.
