“In the last few months we have seen a trend in property crimes, especially the burglaries of vacant houses and utility buildings in our community”, said Chief Mark A. Weeks.
The purpose of the “DEFUNIAK SPRINGS POLICE ALERT ADVISORY” is to warn people of an increase in crimes. Unfortunately, during the Holiday Season, these types of crimes seem to increase especially with the ongoing economy struggle.
The burglaries have occurred at several locations throughout the city to include businesses, vehicles, and unoccupied structures/sheds. The investigation has been extensive and concentrated on several suspects, and their involvement in each incident. The ongoing investigation has revealed several already reported incidents and some unreported incidents. Most of the suspects identified are juveniles and were determined to have been car hopping in several areas.
During the investigation it was determined that the undisclosed suspects operated an organized type crime ring involving the theft of multiple valuables such as firearms and electronics. The arrests of the suspects are forth coming. Limited property to include firearms have been recovered and returned to their rightful owners. If anyone has information regarding this investigation or feel they have been a victim of a recent burglary and have not reported it, they’re encouraged to contact the DeFuniak Springs Police Criminal Investigations Division.
DeFuniak Springs Police would also like to remind their citizens if they notice something suspicious they should call the non-emergency dispatch phone number (850) 892-8513 and to remain anonymous they can leave a message on DeFuniak Springs Police TIP LINE 850-910-TIPS (8477).
