[ARCHIVED] POLICE IMPERSONATORS SCAMMING CITIZENS

DeFuniak Springs Police have received numerous complaints from Citizens about scammers calling them for money. According to the potential victims, the scammers identify themselves as Police Officers with the DeFuniak Springs Police Department. The scammers then say that they are collecting money to help the Police Department. To add to the confusion, the scammers have spoofed their called ID information to make it look like it is coming from the DeFuniak Springs Police.

Chief Weeks wants residents to know that we don’t do business this way. Any legitimate money raising events that we would be involved in are not conducted over the phone and are well advertised with a charitable organization. We are investigating several incidents and it appears to be scammers that are located overseas in countries like Jamaica. This makes prosecution more difficult. Best practice is not to give any information. If in doubt of any person calling, please call us at 850-892-8513 to report it.
